Note: 'Ice Age', despite having been recorded in October 1979 during the same session that produced 'Atmosphere'
and 'Dead Souls', was not thought to belong on this CD, and is included on Disc 1 instead. Even if 'Ice Age' was
not recorded for possible release until Oct. '79 it is a very early JD (possibly even Warsaw) song written in late
'77 or early '78. An early version appeared on the RCA session from early May '78,
and musically as well as lyrically it is safe to say that it belongs on Disc 1.
Disc 3 - includes sixteen unreleased studio recordings

Notes: The "Still" version of 'Walked In Line' originates from the Strawberry
Studio sessions in April 1979, but due to lack of studio time, as well as this song not being among the 10
tracks chosen to be included on "Unknown Pleasures", it was left unfinished. When Factory in 1981 decided
to release the unissued JD studio material on the posthumous "Still" double album some or all of the
remaining JD-members went into the studio with Martin Hannett to put the finishing touches on the tracks that were
left unfinished, 'Walked In Line' being one of these tracks. The box-set version of WIL is the original raw mix
of the song, as recorded in '79. The version on "Still" has some extra guitar and added production from
Hannett.
Many of the unreleased tracks from this disc appear on the Soul and Heart pirate LP
Disc 4 - features live unreleased tracks.
Notes: 'Shadowplay' from The Factory (Russell Club), Manchester 13th July 1979
was for some reason not included here, and it remains the only song from this gig that has not yet been released.
'Transmission' - the final encore from this concert - was a bonus track on the 1988 reissue of 'Atmosphere' (on
the CD issue only).
Heart And Soul; the ultimate - and so far only - JD box-set. Spread over 4 CDs we get
just about every officially released JD song, one full CD of mostly rare and previously unissued material, and
one concert disc featuring previously unreleased live versions.
Disc One, or "Unknown Pleasures Plus", brings together JD's first Factory album as the title suggests,
out-takes from the UP sessions that later surfaced on "Still", a few compilation
tracks and the 'Transmission'/'Novelty' single. As they're all more or less from the same period, collecting all
these songs on one CD works really well.
Disc 2, or "Closer Plus", features material recorded in 1980 or late 1979, and brings together the
"Closer" album and great singles like 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' and 'Atmosphere', as well as some out-takes
and a re-recorded version of 'She's Lost Control'. Needless to say; this is brilliant collection of exceptional
songs.
Disc 3, or "Rarities", is the collection of hard to find tracks many JD collectors and long-time fans
have been waiting for. As well as containing the 4 songs from JD's first EP "An Ideal For Living" and
songs from the much-bootlegged RCA Arrow Studios sessions in May 1978, we also get
material that has never been in circulation before, not even among the most ardent JD tape collectors. The 4 Genetic demos from March 1979 offer alternative if not terribly different, but none the
less very interesting studio versions of songs like 'Transmission' and 'Insight'. Another definite highlight of
this CD is the rehearsal room recording of 'Ceremony' and 'In A Lonely Place' (detail). The latter is missing the
final verse, either due to reasons of taste (the "hangman" line being judged as too controversial or
upsetting perhaps) or simply because the tape ran out during the recording or so the story goes, depending on who
you want to believe. The sound quality of these two tracks leaves something to be desired, but as the only JD "studio"
versions of these two songs they are essential listening for any serious JD fan.
Disc 4, or "Live", contains previously unreleased live material from 1979 and 1980. The sound quality
of the live material isn't quite as good as what one might expect from a professionally recorded live album, but
all in all not too bad. Some or most of the live material originate from audience recordings, but the quality of
these performances make them fascinating to listen to all the same. It would have been nice if London Records had
decided to include some exclusive live material on Disc 4 though, Peter Hook's private live tapes collection would
have been a good place to start looking for some gems. All four live concerts that are featured on "Heart
And Soul" have been in circulation among tape collectors for years, and the lack of any previously unheard
live material is a little bit disappointing. Particularly as Hooky has played tracks from undistributed live tapes
on the radio, so there are definitely more JD live recordings in existence.
The accompanying booklet is very nice too, with lyrics, a detailed discography, a sessionography and a biography.
Also featured is an English translation of the essays which was originally printed in the folder of the limited
"Licht Und Blindheit" issue on the French label Sordide Sentimental. There's also a rather obscure piece
by Paul Morley, which you'll either love it or hate depending on how you like his style of writing. They also had
the great idea of reproducing the Jon Savage JD feature that originally appeared in the Mojo magazine in 1994;
a very interesting and well-researched article indeed. The picture of Ian Curtis on the front cover of the box
is a strange choice though. With so many other great, if maybe a bit too familiar pictures available of IC and
the rest of the band it's weird that they would choose this still picture from a TV appearance on BBC2 in 1979,
in which Ian hardly looks his best.
All in all this is an essential purchase for any JD fan. If you haven't got it already you should pick it up;
this box set is highly recommended!
