Postcards to and from family and friends
Gibraltar.
From José Francisco López to his son:
It says (spellings copied exactly although some is incorrect Spanish!): On the left - a loving message: Querido Hijo te desea Felices Pasquas y Buen Principio d Año. tu Padre que te quiere Jose F Lopez lastima que me Hubo Hecho pagar 2£ y 4P por una pila d tiestos no se ha podido sacar mas que 7 platos y 7 tasas. espero que no mandes mas chirinbolos que no valen el flete. |
Translation: Dear son, Your father Jose F Lopez who loves you wishes you Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. A shame that they made me pay £2.04 for a sink of crockery. It wasn't possible to take out more than 7 plates and 7 cups. I hope you don't send more ?? that aren't worth the freight fee. Two stamps of Queen Victoria and this postcard as a lucky souvenir. |
It says (in Josefa's writing): Esta es la gran pasarela de tu querido Peñon que te mando de recuerdo para tu cimpleaños tu padre y yo. Jose tu padre y Josefa tu madrasta.
|
Translation: This is the big float from your beloved Gibraltar that I'm sending you as a souvenir for your birthday from your father and I. Jose your father and Josefa your stepmother. |
Bessie started to write this postcard to a friend 'Gracie' but never completed or sent it.
The writing says:
Windsor Hotel, Alexandria
Dear Gracie,
Just a card to tell you I am enjoying this tour very much.
Gracie's loss is our gain as we now know the name of
the hotel she stayed at in Alexandria, and from this
newspaper cutting we know the dates she was there (14th
- 20th June 1926).
