14th April 1978: Rafters, Manchester Notes: The Stiff Records/Chiswick Challenge "Battle of the bands". JOY DIVISION came on last, about 2AM after the audience had left. They were raving mad because they had been put last, they only played 3-4 songs but with such an energy that Tony Wilson and Rob Gretton who had remained to seem them was thrilled. To quote Rob: "And I was dancing all over... I went up telling them -at the end- how brilliant I thought it was...and I went raving about them all the next day."
